About BlueCityJohn Celonas BlueCity is a newly formed avant-garde music sextet with tenor/alto saxophone, trumpet/flugelhorn, trombone/guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. Eleven new music/new jazz compositions. The ensemble is inspired from the work of Eric Dolphy to Stockhausen to Sun Ra; Cannonball to the Messengers via the Crusaders; the Lounge Lizards to the Maarten Altena Band; Miles, Trane, Herbie, and more. A native of Victoria, Rich is a versatile drummer and percussionist equally comfortable playing jazz, soul/rock/R&B, hand drumming and classical. He is a skilled mallet player as well. Rich is presently with the Canadian Forces Band in Edmonton. At the University of Victoria, he majored in percussion. Donny is the son of famous Canadian trombone legend, Ian McDougall. He is foremost a classical brass and guitar player with lots of experience in big band trombone sectional playing. He has a M.Mus. in Guitar Performance from the University of Victoria. Victoria born and raised, Bruce is a well-known performer on the jazz scene. He is presently finishing his M.Mus. in Jazz Arranging/Composition at the University of Victoria. John is skilled as an acoustic and electric bass player as well as a serious software programmer. John is completing his Ph.D. in Music Composition at the University of Victoria and is the co-author of John Celonas TimbreSpace music-compositional software programme. Another Victoria native, Wendell performs a variety of musics ranging from jazz, classical, hip-hop, and R&B. He holds a M.Mus. in Performance from Northwestern University. |
